Hardships
Edward John Eyre suffered many hardships on his journey.
Edward was keeping watch one night when he heard a gun shot and saw Wylie running towards him. The other two aboriginal men had shot Baxter and had ran off with the weapons , clothes and most of the supplies . They couldn’t even bury Baxter because the ground was rock solid, so, they decided to wrap him up in a blanket and left him.
The strong sun caused there to not be much water and not being able to get to the sea because of the cliffs which meant they couldn't cool off at all or even get a breeze off the water. There was little shade from the sun, which meant there wasn’t much water there was also not many ways to reach the sea because of the cliffs. Aborginies showed Edward how to find water by digging behind the sand dunes on the shore. They also showed him how to break the roots of gumtrees and suck them to take away their thirst and how to collect early morning dew from the leaves.
Struggling on their journey
Wylie and Edward had to survive on their own by killing and eating kangaroo. Wylie even ate a dead penguin washed up by the shore. They found a French whaling ship off the west coast at Rossiter Bay which is near Esperance. They both rested there for two weeks. The captain, who was an English man, gave them food, wine and brandy. By the time they reached Albany, they had been gone for four and a half months.
